Numeracy Teaching and Learning Program
The implementation of the Mathematics Program at Great Ryrie is based on direct, explicit teaching with the use of concrete materials to support student learning. This teaching philosophy allows students to develop the foundational skills required for them to be able to solve problems that are essential to everyday life.
The mathematics program is delivered daily with the focus on the mathematical strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Alongside these strands the four proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning are also explicitly taught. Student progress is measured against the standards outlined in the Victorian Curriculum using diagnostic testing. This strong focus on assessment ensures that the teaching and learning experiences are targeted to meet the needs of the student.
Through the implementation of our Mathematics Program, students will have an understanding of mathematical concepts, as well as positive attitude towards Maths.
Assessment:
At Great Ryrie Primary School we use Essential Assessment online to assess each individual child and target their learning according to the curriculum area we are learning. We also complete formal assessment of PAT Maths each semester and formal student reports are sent home each semester.
