Sun Smart

Purpose:

The School Community will be encouraged to develop SunSmart practices through the areas of behaviour, curriculum and environment.  We aim to ensure all children are protected from skin damage caused by harmful ultra-violet rays.  It is to be implemented throughout the year but with particular emphasis in Terms 1 and 4.

Guidelines

Our school will :

1.         Behaviour

-           require children and teachers to wear hats which protect the face, neck and ears whenever they are outside

            (eg. recess, lunch, sport, excursions).

-           provide SPF 15+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen for staff and student use whenever possible.

-           encourage children to use available areas of shade for outdoor activities.

-           encourage staff and parents to act as role models by practising SunSmart behaviours.

-           direct children who do not have their hats with them to play in an area protected from the sun.

2.         Curriculum

-           incorporate programs on skin cancer prevention into the curriculum.

-           regularly reinforce SunSmart behaviour in a positive way through newsletters, parent meetings, student and    teacher activities.

3.         Environment

-           schedule outdoor activities before 11.00am and after 3.00pm during Terms 1 & 4 whenever possible.

-           organise outdoor activities to be held in areas of shade whenever possible.

-           work toward increasing the number of shelters and trees so as to provide adequate shade in the schoolgrounds.
