Studies of Society and the Environment (SOSE)

PURPOSE

 

Studies of Society will prepare children to accept the responsibility for active participation in the community by providing them with basic social knowledge, understanding and skills. It also seeks to develop in children the attitudes and values accepted by our society.

 

 

GUIDELINES

 

1.    The program will be based on the Curriculum and Standards Framework document and be supported by the D.S.E. Course Advice and Board of Studies Documentation.

 

2.    An integrated approach building in more than one S.O.S.E. strand where applicable and linking with other C.S.F. Key Learning Areas is encouraged.

 

3.    Teachers are encouraged to use the inquiry-based method of learning, providing an extensive range of teaching strategies to develop skills in investigation, communication and participation.

 

4.    The program will provide learning experiences which extend students’ knowledge of society and the environment.

 

5.    Made aware of global issues, environmental and social issues.

 

6.    The program will assist students to develop, justify and clarify views on social issues and implement courses of action, appropriate to their own values and sensitive to the values of others.

 

7.    Learning experiences which develop in students an appreciation of cultures other than their own should be provided.
