Maths Policy
PURPOSE
Mathematics is a vital part of the child’s primary education. Through meaningful and relevant experiences the school aims to develop an interest, curiosity and enjoyment in mathematics. We also aim to equip the children with the basic mathematical concepts and skills necessary for everyday living and to provide a sound basis for continual mathematical growth.
IMPLEMENTATION
1. Children from years Prep – 6 will be encouraged to use concrete materials in as many stimulating forms wherever and whenever appropriate. This will include the use of games, real objects, manipulative materials, computers, calculators and real life experiences.
2. Students will be made aware of the connection between skills and strategies learnt in Mathematics and everyday living.
3. Students shall work towards developing a clear understanding of the concepts of Space, Number, Measurement, Chance and Data, Working Mathematically and Structure based on the dimensions as outlined in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards.
4. A variety of activities and experiences will be provided to enable students to confidently apply their knowledge, being flexible and creative in problem solving and risk taking situations.
5. The classroom teaching and learning strategies will recognise that children achieve at their own rate and capacity. We will encourage the use of open-ended tasks which provide rich learning experiences, catering for the diverse needs of all students.
6. Close liaison will be maintained between pre-school, VELS Levels and post primary schools to promote consistency and opportunities for moderation and extension.
7. Assessment will be ongoing using a variety of strategies and tasks including teacher , peer and self-assessments.
