First Aid Policy
PHILOSOPHICAL BASIS
The physical well being of members of the school community is of prime importance. The school administration has a duty of care to provide first aid treatment for sick or injured, employees and personnel engaged in school activities.
First aid will continue until the casualty recovers, is given into the custody of a parent or authorised emergency contact person or until medical aid has been obtained.
GUIDELINES
1. One staff member shall be designated the responsibility of ordering First Aid supplies and organising a sick bay roster.
2. All staff should be provided with sufficient knowledge to administer first aid and a number of staff are to be trained to Level 2 Workplace First Aid.
3. First aid kits will be provided for use in classrooms.
4. Staff undertaking excursions outside of school grounds must take a first aid kit and / or back pack plus the Mobile Phone if deemed necessary
5. Parents are to inform the school in writing of any chronic condition suffered by their child, and to make known the symptoms and current treatment.
6. Medical consent forms are to be updated and reviewed annually.
7. Surgical rubber gloves shall be used in attending to all bleeding injuries.
8. Parents must be contacted in all cases involving an injury to the head.
9. As a general rule, children encountering minor problems shall consult with teachers on yard duty before coming to the sick bay for further treatment.
10. Class teachers of any children admitted to sick bay should be informed, and the action discussed with the teacher.
11. During lesson time, more severe cases of sickness or injury that occur are referred to the office, with appropriate form as necessary and the parents notified.
12. All accidents more severe than a simple graze must be recorded in the accident register.
13. Any child who spends time in the sick bay, is treated for some illness or injury, or complains of feeling unwell will be given an casualty / illness report to take home.
14. No child is to be left in sick bay at the end of recess or lunch time without the admin staff and class teacher being informed. The teacher on duty is responsible to report this information.
15. It is essential that all bedding be laundered and / or replaced on a regular basis.
